Remember a few years ago, the right wing was all a-twitter because John Kerry said a lot of foreign leaders would prefer him to Bush?
Compare that to today’s Kathleen Parker column in which she asserts that—according to an Iraqi journalist she spoke with—most Iraqis would prefer McCain for fear that if Obama or Clinton wins, they’d pull us out of the war. And this, we are supposed to take as an argument in McCain’s favor.
Sorry, but this doesn’t change a thing. If the war in Iraq is going badly—which it is—then the journalist, Mayada al-Askari, is just as wrong as Americans who think that if we just “stay strong” and don’t “weaken,” victory is inevitable. Wanting us to fix this quagmire doesn’t mean we can do it.
And, of course, one journalist’s assessment doesn’t count for much: Look how often this election season American journalists have misread the mood of America.
But Parker has always been a little obsessed with what Arabs think of us: After those Brits were captured by Iran, then released with a lecture on how the women shouldn’t have been in the military, Parker honest to God claimed she was humiliated that Iran had criticized us.
