Florida government at work

February 27th, 2009, 2:09 pm by fsherman

A recent Tallahassee Democrat column on shell bills, bills that have been prefiled but don’t say anything other than “Expresses the legislative intent to revise laws relating to governmental operations.” Durell Peaden has filed 10 of them.
I’m not sure if things are done like this to avoid alerting the opposition or to make sure a pet bill reaches the floor even if the sponsor doesn’t know exactly what they want yet.

First in war, first in peace, first in corruption

A new Justice Department report finds that 824 public officials in Florida have been convicted of corruption over the past decade, the highest of any state (ranked per capita, we’re 14th).

So I presume all the talking heads now discussing how significant it is that Obama comes from the oh-so-corrupt city of Chicago will reference Florida corruption when Jeb Bush runs for the White House.

Oh, wait, that would require applying the same standard to Republican conservatives. Silly me.

Destin Dolphin recognition is the first agenda item.

While I’m by no means a sports fan (I refer to myself as “sports impaired”) I’ve got to say that their performance is pretty cool.

Mayor Craig Barker: “They finished their regular season with an undefeated regular season of seven wins” capped off by two playoff games and a “superbowl” win.

Like I said, pretty cool.

Official state thingies

October 17th, 2008, 10:24 am by fsherman

As some of you may know, Florida has a lot of these: State bird, state mammal, state fish, state soil, state rock, state sand, state tree …

But here’s one we don’t have: A State Book. A Massachusetts legislator wanted to nominate “Moby Dick” as State Book but ran into opposition (what about Little Women or some of the other classics?), so he settled for State Epic Novel instead.

So if Florida had a State Book, what should it be? The Yearling? Something by Hiassen? Or what?
