Speaking of absurdity

According to Senator Tom Coburn’s chief of staff, Michael Coburn, heterosexual porn is actually homosexual porn (courtesy of ThinkProgress):

SCHWARTZ: And one of the things that he said to me, that I think is an astonishingly insightful remark. He said, “all pornography is homosexual pornography because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards. Now think about that. And if you, if you tell an 11-year-old boy about that, do you think he’s going to want to go out and get a copy of Playboy? I’m pretty sure he’ll lose interest. That’s the last thing he wants.” You know, that’s a, that’s a good comment. It’s a good point and it’s a good thing to teach young people.”

Like I said, it’s getting harder and harder to respond to the right wing rationally. So I’ll just let this one stand on its own.

Awful Library Books reviews bad and outdated library books from various collections: Computer books from the early nineties (or one from the sixties, when it was still all punch-cards), investment books from the seventies, wedding-planning books that discuss budgeting with 1984 dollars, etc.
Which from a historical perspective might be useful, but I agree they have no place on current shelves.

Someone mentioned that the event was promoted on the Chamber of Commerce Web site which probably helped draw attention: “I think it was a good idea to put it on the Chamber of Secrets …whenever I say ‘chamber of’ I always say secrets.”

Julie: “My husband will be really excited–he’s been tending the kids, but now I can say ‘honey, it’s worth it!’”
And the young woman sitting next to her that I quoted was Skyler Calloway.
Katie Moore (I think) got the DVD (or the book on audiobook, I’m not sure which).
The raffle for the books is next. Daniel Cannon (one of the boys in attendance) suggests the ticket drawer keep her eye out for his name … but no, Cathy Lewis, the Ohioan, gets the book set. Tina says they’ll mail her the fourth book (it’s not out in paperback yet).
Cannon says he like sthem because “They’ve got a romance but also having action.”
His friend Eli Dillon gives his take: “That they’re awesome.”
And we’re done, though everyone’s continuing to stand around and chat. I think I’ll wrap up (with power left, waa-hoo!).

The mood in the room

Fun. It’s a lot like the SF and Anime cons that I’ve gone to, a sense that everyone’s here for the same thing, nobody’s going to think you’re strange if you gush and everyone feels free to talk about their passion and know other people get it. That’s a fun feeling.
A question references Bella reading Wuthering Heights; Julie admits she read Wuthering Heights after Twilight (the Bronte classic is an acknowledged influence on Meyer’s story). Her neighbor says “I have to read it–I took a quiz that says I’m that author.” (A facebook quiz, before you ask).
And a couple of people are covering up their ears and singing to avoid hearing the answer to the next question, which is a spoiler for one of the later books.

This group seems to be in a general discussion of books.
Julie: “Write this down!” Pointing to her teenage neighbor. “She said ‘you don’t look you’re in your thirties’!” (the neighbor is correct, I should add).
Julie: So what is that motivates you to get passionate enough about Twilight to come here?
And now we have some more people coming in–I think it’s the fourth book group, from out in the hall.
And it’s time for the quiz wins:
On the quotes quiz, two girls got 80 percent.
Ahh, two of the newcomers are guys, but they recognize some of the quotes as Tina reads them.

The movies

Terri again, on being relieved that the party isn’t all “teenyboppers”–”people my age, I dont’ feel like a freak!”
General laughter and sympathy (this is a group of all adults). One’s mentioning she has some Twilight music on her ring tone.
Tina is handing out raffle tickets. The prize is a Twilight set and a DVD of the movie.
